Opera Mini for iOS isn’t dead after all - the developers were just waiting for iPhone 8

Earlier this year, I was shocked to learn that development of Opera for iOS was effectively dead. No, this was not just a rumor — an Opera employee told me publicly on Twitter. And so, we here at BetaNews reported the unfortunate news. Luckily, the report of the browser’s demise was short-lived — the company later told me the employee was misinformed. I was dubious, so I took a wait-and-see approach to see just how alive development truly was. Well, today, Opera supplied proof that its popular Mini browser is alive and kicking — a new version! Apparently the company was just waiting for the iPhone 8 before updating the web browser. In a blog post highlighting the upcoming release of a new iPhone, the company shares that the user interface has been refreshed. For instance, there is more use of the “Opera red” color and trending news stories have been bumped to the top of the start page. New features have been added too, such as an enhanced search bar that can scan QR codes. “The AI-po

Hurricane Irma makes landfall in Cuba as massive storm

Image
Hurricane Irma made landfall as a maximum-strength Category Five storm late Friday, US forecasters said, after leaving a trail of death and destruction on a string of Caribbean islands. At 0300 GMT, the monster storm had made landfall on the communist island’s Camaguey Archipelago, with the eye of the storm just 190 kilometers (120 miles) east-southeast of the Cuban city of Caibarien, and 300 miles south-southeast of Miami, according to the US National Hurricane Center. It had maximum sustained winds of 260 kilometers per hour and was moving west at 20 kilometers per hour, also posing an increasing threat to the US state of Florida.

Duck Hunt Is Back In Virtual Reality With A Dark, Psychopathic Twist

Image
Remember Duck Hunt, the arcade shooter that lived on the same NES cartridge as Super Mario Bros? Well, following a 33-year hiatus, this infamous Nintendo shoot-em-up, which came with an official gun-shaped zapper, is making a virtual-reality come back – with a dark, psychopathic twist. Duck Season is an updated version of the original, serving as a throwback to the golden age of 1980s gaming, with "a hint of horror in a Spielburgian universe," the description reads. Its developers, Stress Level Zero, invite players to "re-live" their childhood as they are transported to an eerily familiar memory to play out the "dark story that unfolds." This coming-of-age tale takes place during the Summer of 1988. Your mom just bought you the hottest new duck-shooting game but after hours of playing, it becomes apparent something is off. It has a Stranger Things kinda vibe, and the dog is suspected to be a "serial killer," Engadget reports. Within a "r

French pranksters replace holy water with alcohol

Image
Tourists visiting a church in the picturesque French town of Chateau-Chalon were surprised to discover that local pranksters had replaced the fonts’ holy water with alcohol, the local tourism office said Friday. A dozen tourists sniffed out the telltale signs of eau-de-vie, a clear fruit brandy, when they visited the church in Jura, eastern France, at the end of August. “I made the sign of the cross and it smelt like eau-de-vie. Is this a local tradition?” the tourists asked officials at the nearby visitor centre. The enquiries prompted the authorities to carry out an impromptu investigation. “A litre of brandy had been poured into both of the fonts, you really smelt the alcohol when you walked into the church,” local tourism official Pauline Fisseau said. The church is not regularly used for mass and the fonts are usually empty. The two fonts were immediately drained and cleaned before being filled with more traditional holy water ahead of a festival the following day. The iden

Benue Flood IDP Camp Turns To S*x Haven As Packs of used condom, Blood-stained pants litter camp

Image
The recent flood disaster in Benue State has paved way for sex-crazed persons to have fun at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) set up to cater for victims. DAILY POST exclusively gathered that the romp has become rampant in the IDP camp within the last one week. Our reporter, who was at the IDP camp during the weekend, discovered that despite the conducive environment, some people are engaging in sexual intercourse right in the camp. Packs of used condoms and a blood-stained pant were seen. One of the IDPs, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, alleged that some individuals troop into the camp at night in the name of bringing relief materials to the flood victims but end up ‘bedding’ some of the homeless female victims. He said aside the visitors, men and women within the camp also engage in sexual escapade. A mother of three, who gave her name as Rose told this reporter that a particular man she identified as Famous always come to the camp at night and go out with some of the

A 23-year-old university dropout just launched a cheaper rival to Uber in London

Image
7 Ordering a taxi by app has just become even cheaper. Taxify, an Estonian competitor to Uber, will launch in the city on Tuesday with a 50% discount on fares during September to get people downloading its app. Like Uber, passengers download the Taxify app, register their number, and order a cab to their location. Unlike Uber, passengers can pay by cash or through the app with a pre-registered bank card. When Business Insider compared the same journey across the two apps, Taxify came out almost three times cheaper than Uber. A journey from Aldgate East to Angel station would cost around £4.35 on Taxify. Uber estimates that the same journey would cost £16 on Uber X. (Note: Uber was showing surge pricing at the time, meaning it was more expensive than usual.) Despite a bold promise to take on Uber in London, Taxify is still relatively unknown. Its founder is 23-year-old university dropout Markus Villig, who started Taxify at home before expanding to 19 markets in Africa and eastern

Moto X4: Unremarkable design, but still a good mid-ranger

Image
In 2013, Motorola and Google unveiled the first Moto X device. The product of unfortunate (and severe) overhype, Moto X’s debut was underwhelming to say the least. The specs were mediocre, the price was too high, and the famous Moto Maker that would give it the personality it would always be remembered for hadn’t been released yet. From the looks of things, even Google couldn’t bring back Motorola’s once shining reputation. As luck would have it, things did turn around for the Moto X. Soon after its debut, almost everything that was wrong with the Moto X was fixed. Prices were slashed, matching its average specs, and Moto Maker was released, giving buyers an incentive to give the Moto X a second chance; after all, no other OEM had ever offered as much control over a phone’s design as Moto Maker did. Changing the phone’s color, texture, and accent color was completely unheard of. These changes solidified Moto X’s place in smartphone history as one of the better, more memorable devices

Analyst says Facebook Inc Is Exaggerating Ad Reach Data By Millions

Image
Facebook might be inflating the number of people who see advertisements on its platform, according to Pivotal Research Group analyst Brian Wieser. He has a Sell rating on the stock with a price target of $140. geralt / Pixabay What’s the problem with Facebook ad reach? According to Facebook’s ad manager, advertisements on the site reach 41 million people aged between 18 to 24 and 60 million between 25 and 34 in the United States. However, U.S. census data suggests that last year, a total of 31 million people were in the age group of 18 to 24 and 45 million were in the 25 to 34 age group. “While Facebook’s measurement issues won’t necessarily deter advertisers from spending money with Facebook; they will help traditional TV sellers justify existing budget shares and could restrain Facebook’s growth in video ad sales on the margins,” said Wieser. Rubbishing the whole report, Facebook told Reuters that its reach estimates are designed in a way to estimate the number of people who are
